The young girls with shining eyes and lifted heads leave a strong impression on me during the medieval spectacle in front of the abbey of Domrémy-la-Pucelle in the French Vosges. The almost entire population of the small village actively participates in the annual evocation play about the life, death and rehabilitation of their hero, Joan of Arc, or Jehanne as she was called here.

Jehanne was no ordinary hero. She was guided by her inner voices, which she attributed to Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret. These voices connected her to the divine and to what Jehanne felt was her life’s mission. She passionately made her pleas calling on the population to support Charles VII as the rightful leader of her homeland. She went to war when she was sixteen years old, donned men’s clothes and learned to ride a horse. She hated killing people, every death in battle was one too many. The question remains whether she ever took the life of a person. There was a lot of conflict in Jehanne’s mind in that area, but she continued to fight for what she felt was fair. She died by fire on a pyre in Rouen at the age of nineteen. Condemned as a heretic by an Ecclesiastical court. Twenty-five years after her death, the process was revised and she was rehabilitated. In the history books, she is now officially a hero and a saint.

Where did Jehanne get her passion and her perseverance? What made her a legitimate hero, who also has doubts, dares to express uncertainty and fear and ultimately trusts her inner guidance? What shaped her into a true Shero – a female hero – and what message does she have for today’s youth?
